A portrait can be about many things - a likeness to the appearance of the sitter certainly, but then there is more: an atmosphere, a mood, a certain piece of clothing that triggers a thought, a memory, a guess of who the person in the picture might be. It can be as much about forming an impression as about projecting an idea, inventing a story which will bring together the different elements that come with every look. The variety of “image” we encounter and produce relates directly to the many different ways of painting: every glance - a new impression, taking shape in another form.
